hi ms. martha
thank you so much for a prompt response. from your profile and the pictures i could get you are a ballet teacher. for my audition DVD that i need to send for the admission in dna,i have to send an abbreviated ballet barre work. can you help me with that if possible. in india we do not have ballet training, so i have very limited knowledge in ballet. i know very basic of ballet. is there any particular format you follow for barre, center work etc.
and do you know any indian there who is a part of the program?
dna was recommended to me by marin leggat and rebecca jennejohn. they came down to mumbai for a month to put up a modern piece with Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company, to which i am a part of for three years now.
thank you again

Hi to All DNA folks -
as you know, there will be a Memorial Service for Jim Garvey next Sunday the 22nd. If you have any photos or memories to contribute to this, please let Flo know!

I plan to be there to remember Jim, who I can't quite believe is gone... so perhaps he isn't yet, but is looking down on us with that elfin grin...

Profile Information

Full Name:
Martha Chapman
About Me:
Ballet faculty & Board member @ DNA where I teach grown-ups (so-called...), also "uptown" at Steps on Broadway where I teach kids. Former ballet dancer, now dance w/ Omega Liturgical Dance Co. & at my own church, the Church of the Village. You can see my choreography on the website of the National Cathedral in Washington DC (see below)! Love teaching and learning at DNA...
Brief artistic bio (required for Faculty, Guest Artists and Subs):
Martha danced with NYC Opera Ballet, NJ Ballet and others; performing across America and abroad. On DNA's faculty since 1997 and with The School at Steps/Steps on Broadway since 1999, she has also taught master classes, lecture demonstrations, workshops on injury prevention/maintenance, and on "Dance as a Career."

Martha's teaching philosophy connects thought patterns with body placement. Through images and body awareness, we learn control of bone placement, connecting this with use or release of muscle groups. This, with time and patience, builds dance technique! Dance unites body, mind and spirit, promoting health and well-being, true regardless of a student's level, from beginner to professional.
Class Descriptions (required for Faculty, Guest Artists and Subs):
Slow Beginner:
Clear explanations of Barre (warm-up) and Center-floor vocabulary; break-down of step execution to build understanding of movement sequences. Great work-out too!

Beginner/Advanced Beginner:
Presumes basic knowledge of ballet terminology, develops strength through repetition and focus on placement and proper technical execution of steps.

Slow Intermediate:
Basic technique needed, more challenging vocabulary and class combinations than Beginner, still breaks down step execution. Great transition from Beginner to Intermediate level.

Intermediate:
Students ready for increased complexity, weight & direction changes, introduces more advanced step vocabulary and faster musical tempos.

Basic Ballet Workshop:
6-session workshop offered 2-3 times/year for ‘true beginners’ or those who want a refresher course. Covers basic ballet terminology used in ballet, modern and jazz classes; students get weekly terminology sheets. “Q&A” follows each class. Just bring your best effort!
Any other information that you want to share:

SOMETHING PERSONAL TO SHARE...We are building a family!

Hello Dancing Friends & Students!
I know you all through different dancing connections… and want to share with you something special! My fantastic husband, Paul and I have decided to adopt a child! We are now in the process of searching for the baby meant to be with us.

We are certified by the state of New York to become adoptive parents and have chosen to work with a lawyer we feel really good about, Now we go about finding a child to adopt! Since we are not using an agency, we must find an expecting birth mother to choose us as the couple to adopt her baby. To help in that process, we have a website “profile” about ourselves, our desire to adopt, our family and friends and what our life is like. We also have a toll-free telephone line and a email address for potential birth-parents to contact us. That information is:

Martha & Paul’s website profile: www.adoption4yourbaby.com
Email: marthapaul@adoption4yourbaby.com
Toll-Free Telephone: 1 (800) 735-0934

You can help by sharing this news as widely as you feel comfortable doing - you never know where the connection that will lead to a child for us and to a family for the child will begin! It could be you! If you do know or meet a birth mom, tell her about us. Please only use our first names to protect our privacy until we decide if it’s a good fit. We’d also be happy to send a hard copy of our letter and profile to you or to her if you’d prefer.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, connections and communication, and I hope to see you in dance classes at DNA soon!

Peace- Martha Chapman
