About Me:
THE NEW YORK CENTER FOR FLAMENCO PERFORMING ARTS/ARTSFLAMENCO
Our History
The New York Center For Flamenco Performing Arts/ArtsFlamenco (“ArtsFlamenco”) was incorporated in New York on December 26, 2003 as a not-for-profit corporation and granted tax-exempt status as an I.R.C. §501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service.
Our Mission
ArtsFlamenco was formed to:
- preserve the traditions of flamenco, while also evolving flamenco as an artform;
- be a centralized resource that promotes flamenco music, dance and culture;
- foster an intelligent appreciation for the flamenco artform through education and performance;
- create a cultural bridge to and from the United States through a flamenco artist exchange program;
- provide performance opportunities for flamenco artists while also making flamenco accessible and affordable to all audiences.
Our Core Programs
Dance Company: Pasión Flamenca, our organization’s dance company, performs traditional flamenco compositions as well as choreodramatic pieces.
Productions: Alegrías Flamenco Theater is the theater wing of our organization. We produce weekend flamenco performances at various venues throughout Manhattan, all designed to replicate an Andalusian tablao flamenco with two nightly, 45-minute performances featuring local and international artists and the service of Spanish fare.
Arts-in-Education: ArtsFlamenco presents teaching artist residencies, lecture/demonstration performances, flamenco dance workshops, and hosts field trips for schools grades K – 12 to Alegrías Flamenco Theater.
Dance Classes: ArtsFlamenco teaches regularly scheduled dance classes for adults in midtown Manhattan. We teach specialty workshops during the summer and Sevillanas classes twice annually.
Brief artistic bio (required for Faculty, Guest Artists and Subs):
Our artistic director, Jorge Navarro, a native of Andalusia, Spain, has more than thirty years of performance experience and more than twenty years of choreography and production experience. After traveling throughout Europe and the Americas for 15 years as a dance company member and featured soloist, he formed his own dance company, Pasión Flamenca. Under Sr. Navarro’s direction, the company toured North and South America for 10 years. He thereafter opened his own tablao flamenco (a Spanish eatery featuring flamenco performances) that Time Out New York called “the Temple of Flamenco,” and the Village Voice named the “Best Tapas Bar in New York City.” He closed his business in 2001 to embark on his longtime dream of building a flamenco cultural center in New York; hence the birth of ArtsFlamenco.
Our choreography director, Antonio Hidalgo of Córdoba, Spain, has more than twenty years performance and choreography experience. He was the lead choreographer and consultant for the Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo dance company for several years, and principal dancer for Compañia Antonio Gades in Madrid, a very prestigious role in Spain. He performed throughout Europe, Russia and Asia with his own dance company for ten years. A long-time friend and business associate of Sr. Navarro, he shares the same vision for constructing a New York-based flamenco cultural center.
