That sounds like something someone says when they win American Idol, or So You Think You Can Dance! Wholeheartedly agree. I've done other things all my life (financial sector, technical field etc.) Yet I call myself a dancer. The whole point of da...

Brief artistic bio (required for Faculty, Guest Artists and Subs):
IT BEGAN for Rob Divine (née Robert José Zamora) in the NYC goth club scene of the late 80's/early 90's, where every night was an improv jam – only everyone was wearing black eyeliner and pointy skull-buckle boots. Performance art grew there, in the darkened catacombs of the Bank, Pyramid, the Batcave, Limelight, and Mother – black-clad dancers amid the billowy white smoke of dry ice and nicotine (or cloves), writhing to the music that formed the basis of who we were as a subculture. Then one day Rob Divine saw a live ballet – a virtuoso dancer had executed the double assemble en tournant en l’air – and it was then that he decided he wanted to jump into dance with both feet (and land in fifth). He wanted to be Superman. He wanted to execute acts of physicality that mere mortals could only dream about. He wanted the seemingly divine powers that a danseur noble possessed. So began his training journey.

Rob Divine spent two years at the Graham School, and has also studied jazz with Gabrielle Taylor, and modern with Sean Curran at Soundance. He has also attended master classes with jazz great Frank Hatchett, and ballet with ABT's Kat Wildish, at Broadway Dance Center. He then discovered Dance Space Center (now Dance New Amsterdam) and studied modern with Barbara Fraser for 3 years. Rob fell into his first Simonson Jazz class at Dance Space, and has spent the last 18 years perfecting that technique. Rob has had lengthy study with Isabel Gotzkowsky, an active dancer/choreographer and teacher who helped define his personal movement style in the critical formative years, and has studied more than 10 years consistently with Diane McCarthy who made him the technician that he is today.

SHADOWS OF ANGELS DANCE COMPANY

Many years later, the goth imagery again rears its grimly fiendish head as Rob Divine seeks to reconnect the goth theme and motif with technical dance awareness. The goth scene is a rich subculture to have come from – full of distinctive aesthetics, etiquette, and beliefs just like any other culture through the years, and thus it is the perfect inspiration for theatrical exploration. There is beauty in darkness, and Shadows of Angels Dance Company exists to showcase that beauty.

1992 – 1997:

Since 1992, Lauren Vile and Rob Divine have shown pieces at NYC's own Danceteria, Club 58, Limelight, CBGB's Gallery, and of course Pyramid, where we had our start. We've performed to: Lords of the New Church's "the Lord's Prayer", Kommunity Fk's "Vision and the Voice", and various Sisters of Mercy. In 1997 we resurrected our signature piece "Driven Like the Snow (the Dark Nutcracker)", for Alchemy at CBGB's Gallery.

JUNE, 2004:

As of June, 2004, Shadows of Angels Dance Company consists of Rob Divine and Cheryl Bond. Cheryl Bond brings a wealth of performance and creative/artistic experience gained from her studies at the Ailey School, her Limon and other modern techniques, and presentation of her own personal work.

AUGUST, 2005:

Shadows of Angels are back in the studio with guest co-choreographer and professional ballerina Vahni, who dances for ABT Studio when in NYC, and English National Ballet when in London. There are 3 pieces in the works: a solo based on the Changelings’ Red Shift; a Rozz Williams tribute duet to the Christian Death (Leather Strip remix) version of Venus in Furs; and in the tradition of the classical ballets, a goth fairy tale duet based on the Changelings’ 11:59 October 30.

THE FUTURE:

Shadows of Angels is always seeking out fellow dark artists to share views, dance collaborators, and live music collaborators (violinist, cellist). If you've ever fancied the idea of appearing in a gothic horror movie IN DANCE FORM, do inquire within.....

SPACE WARS...THE JAZZ COMBO

A dancer friend of mine once mused, what if you numbered your jazz tricks, then you could remember your choreography by just enumerating a series of numbers. For example, jazz trick # 42...followed by jazz trick # 17...pas de bourree...jazz trick # 23...etc. Or going one further, choreograph by plugging into a random number generator on a computer. How silly is that? Thats almost as silly as assigning a letter of the alphabet to a sound. Oh wait, musicians actually do that!

Well,… Continue

Does anyone else dream in paso doble?

I was a little down on myself this weekend due to not feeling as if I had enough energy for one adv. jazz class, let alone 3 dance classes, a Pilates, and a brainstorming rehearsal like last weekend. So Sunday evening I settled in with a huge oven roasted turkey (big fan of lean protein), some chips, and a bunch of wine coolers. Maybe its that magic component in turkey that makes you sleepy, but I dreamt that I was in a tango/paso doble piece with my real-life ballroom dancer friend K. A third p… Continue

Shadows of Angels Dance Company has.....

A COMMISSION. Geez Louise its been awhile since I've said that. I am happy and excited, but also more than a little scared right now. Some of you who are in the scene 1-for the money, 2-for the show etc. may say: whats the big honkin' deal, my company gets 3 commissions every 6 months...how do you think I put bread on the table?? Well its been about 11 years since I've actually been asked to come up with something FOR someone, as opposed to coming up with something just for the love of the game.… Continue
